Customs and Border Protection Officers Want Law Enforcement Officer Status
Flag Day Rally at JFK Airport To Call For Law Enforcement Officer Status for CBP OfficersEvery day dedicated officers of the Department of Homeland Securitys Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are on the front lines keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of our country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. Jamaica, NY (PRWEB) June 9, 2006 -- Every day dedicated officers of the Department of Homeland Securitys Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are on the front lines keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of our country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. These CBP Officers have the broadest law enforcement authority of any federal government agency yet they dont have one thing other federal law enforcement officers have: Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) status.
On a typical day CBP employees:
Arrest 135 suspects at U.S. ports of entry
Detain 1 suspected terrorist
Seize 2,313 pounds of narcotics at ports of entry
Confiscate 196 firearms at airports, seaports, or border crossings
Intercept 210 fraudulent documents
CBP Officers deserve nothing less than full LEO status which would make them eligible to retire at age 50 after 20 years of government service. The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) strongly supports pending legislation in Congress, H.R. 1002 The Law Enforcement Officers Equity Act, that would extend this coverage to CBP Officers.
CBP employees from JFK Airport will rally in support of LEO status on Flag Day, June 14 at the softball field on Federal Circle (JFK Airport grounds off the Van Wick expressway) at 11:30 a.m.
Nationally, NTEU represents nearly 16,000 CBP employees. Locally, NTEU Chapter 153 represents roughly 900 CBP employees.
