Jonathan Newell, Editor, writes:
One of the news categories on Prosecuritytalk is secure communications
in the section on IT security, software and communications and you may
wonder how important this is in the overall structure of managing
security. With the integration of different technologies to create a
balanced surveillance, monitoring and access control environment, the
communication backbone that links all of this together is the
company's server and local area network, the security of which is
paramount.
Integration is what everyone's selling at the moment and IP cameras
have simplified the process for everyone. Cheap, simple and effective
camera networks can be integrated with biometric software to provide
access control and prevent tail-gating and buddying. Give an
electronic lock an IP address and your employees don't even have to
take their hands out of their pockets - the system will identify them,
let them in and record their working hours for the payroll department.
Its very effective, incredibly easy and very cheap with lots of
vendors falling over themselves to bolt it all together for you.
Any security professional will now be asking where the weakest link is
and the answer is the IT guy who holds the key to it all. All these
systems from the cameras to the time and attendance system communicate
on a TCP/IP network that could also connect to the office or the
warehouse. What are the exit points from this network? A laptop, flash
memory, routers and wireless networks to name just a few - all of
which are controlled by the IT administrator.
Secure communications are therefore essential. The field of IT can no
longer be considered as a separate entity, it is enmeshed with the
whole operational scope of the business including physical security
and the IT department must satisfy all the necessary requirements in
terms of network access control, password management, disaster
recovery and continuity.

[1] PHYSICAL ACCESS CONTROL READER AT IFSEC
(TDSi, 12 Mar 2007)
Access control specialist, TDSi, is to showcase its latest suite of
products at IFSEC in May. One product of note is PalmGarde, a
dedicated physical access control reader incorporating PalmSecure
technology from Fujitsu. Working on near-infrared light, PalmGarde
reads and processes the vein pattern in the palm of the hand.
Established in the womb, this pattern remains unchanged through a
person's life - unlike fingerprints, which change through childhood
and can be prone to damage and distortion. PalmGarde delivers a
robust and reliable biometric technology, and since no contact with
the actual sensor is required offers a hygienic, user-friendly
solution appropriate for any public area; particularly those within a
healthcare environment. It also delivers extraordinarily high
standards of accuracy. Boasting a false rejection rate of 0.01% and a
false acceptance rate of less than 0.00008%, PalmGarde offers a highly
secure access control solution, delivering considerable advantages
over other biometric technologies.

[2] ROAD BARRIER CRASH TESTED AT 7500KG AT 80KM/HR
(Frontier Pitts Ltd, 09 Mar 2007)
The Terra Road Closer, a horizontally opened, reinforced hinged beam,
was crash tested in accordance with British standard PAS 68-69 2007
standards and Department of State test standard SD-STD-2.01 Revision
A, Certification Class K12. The test was conducted to prove the
arresting capability of the Terra Road Closer when impacted with a
7500kg test vehicle at a speed of 80km/hour (50mph). Following the
highly successful crash tests involving the other certified equipment
in the Anti Terra range, Frontier Pitts was confident that the Terra
Road Closer would also pass the toughest test and achieve the most
difficult standard. This impressive test result has not only proved
the stopping power of this equipment, but also the reliability and
fortitude of design.

[3] ELIMINATE PASSWORDS WITH FINGERPRINT RECOGNITION
(fingerPIN, 05 Mar 2007)
fingerPIN has announced the shipment of its logical access product
MatchLogon with fingerPIN. Developed for secure network access and
logon the technology uses fingerPIN's patented multi-fingerprint
sequence technology to provide a single step two factor authentication
which completely eliminates the need for passwords and tokens.
MatchLogon with fingerPIN v1.5 is a robust security platform offering
authentication, authorisation, auditing, and administration for the
Microsoft Windows Active Directory. The fingerPIN is a biometric
fingerprinting technology that increases the complexity of penetrating
single fingerprint security methods. It transforms an existing single
fingerprint reader into a sophisticated multiple fingerprint reader
through a simple software upgrade. Through the fingerPIN the risk of
someone fraudulently logging on or accessing a secure directory using
a third person's fingerprint data is reduced to 1 in 10 billion due to
fingerPIN's powerful matching engine which reduces false acceptances
and stores and recalls templates in sequence.

[4] SELF PROGRAMMING ELECTRONIC LOCKING SYSTEM
(Salto Systems, 09 Mar 2007)
Salto Systems has launched a new self programming electronic locking
system specially designed to control doors locked by a mortice lock or
multi point lock and doors that have electronic locking devices (such
as electric strikes magnets, car park barriers etc). The new Smile
range is suitable for use when you want to control doors on a site by
simple programming from tags, and where no software or computer is
required for programming. It makes the perfect replacement of a
mechanical master keying system bringing electronic control of the
system and reducing replacement cylinder costs and risk at low cost.
Available in a wall reader format and two models of electronic handle
it covers most needs on a site. Both handle types are quick and
simple to fit with bolt through fixing to provide stand alone wire
free security solutions. They are designed to work with most types of
lock with an 8mm follower and euro profile cylinder locks, any type of
door, including those with narrow styled frames and multi point
locking doors.

[6] THREE-DIMENSIONAL ZONE MONITORING
(Pilz Automation Technology, 05 Mar 2007)
Pilz is launching SafetyEYE, the world's first safe camera system for
three-dimensional zone monitoring, which could change the face of
automotive production lines and other automated manufacturing
environments. The same system also has potential applications outside
industry, such as protecting museum exhibits. In comparison with
traditional hinged and sliding machine guards, safety light curtains
and laser area scanners are highly advantageous for applications
requiring frequent access by operators. Not only is opening a
physical guard time-consuming and fatiguing, but maintenance can be
hindered by the presence of the guard and its supporting structure.
Nevertheless, light curtains and laser area scanners only monitor a
flat plane - though mirrors and/or multiple light curtains can be used
to create faceted protection zones. As a result, the protected area
is often greater than the hazardous zone, which is a waste of floor
space and can also mean that the barrier is triggered earlier than is
absolutely necessary, costing valuable process time. In the world of
mass production, where floor space is expensive and time is of the
essence, it would clearly be beneficial to have a non-physical safety
barrier that can protect a three-dimensional zone closely matching the
hazardous zone. And this is exactly what Pilz and DaimlerChrysler
have done by developing SafetyEYE, a safety-related sensing and
control system that is based on three-dimensional machine vision.

[7] PACKAGE SCREENING X-RAY SCREEN
(Applied Scintillation Technologies, 09 Mar 2007)
With letter-bomb attacks in the UK recently dominating the headlines,
Applied Scintillation Technologies announces the latest in its range
of X-ray intensifying screens for use in security screening. The new
SecureX HB is a high-brightness screen, available in large areas,
designed for use in non-conveyorised X-ray detection systems for low
throughput checking of baggage and packages. The high sensitivity
SecureX HB screen is particularly suitable for use in systems using
multi level energy control for enhanced detection of plastic
explosives, fine wires, incendiary devices and drugs. It can be used
with free standing X-ray units, compact desk top units and portable
X-ray viewing screens for on the spot examination of suspicious
objects. SecureX HB offers inspection systems manufacturers great
flexibility and performance. The screen can be mounted on a variety
of rigid supports if required, including carbon fibre. Screens can be
manufactured to the size and shape determined by the application, so
there is no waste or cutting.

[8] IP CCTV NETWORK DEPLOYED IN SCOTLAND
(Telewest Business, 05 Mar 2007)
Central Scotland has become one of the safest places in Britain as a
21st century IP CCTV service has been unveiled. Powered by
ntl:Telewest Business, the UK's second largest business communications
services provider, this is one of the largest IP CCTV installations in
Europe. North Lanarkshire Council has teamed up with the police, fire

[9] UPGRADED CCTV SYSTEMS FOR TRANS-PENNINE RAILWAY
(Siemens Building Technologies, 09 Mar 2007)
Passengers travelling on the TransPennine Express in the North of
England will soon see dramatic improvements to passenger information
and safety systems as Siemens commences work on a major refurbishment
programme worth GBP5 million to upgrade 29 of its rail stations.
Siemens Building Technologies, Security Systems, in partnership with
sister company Transmitton, will supply and install new security and
passenger information systems, as well as equipping a new central
control room at TransPennine Express' headquarters in Manchester.
Work has already started at most sites and is due for completion in
Spring 2007. For rail passengers, automated announcements and travel
information will be provided by new public address systems (PA) and,
for the first time in the UK rail industry, new, intuitive, touch
screen passenger help points (PHP) will be provided, half of which
will be interactive and will even offer direct web access - technology
which Siemens has developed specially for this application. For
increased passenger safety and security, CCTV systems are being
upgraded and expanded on all stations.

[10] RECRUITMENT COMPANY EMPLOYS PRE APPOINTMENT CHECKS
(BackgroundChecking.com, 12 Mar 2007)
Ardea Recruitment Consultancy, the executive recruitment company, has
appointed BackgroundChecking.com, an Experian company, to provide
pre-employment screening services on potential candidates. With
employee fraud on the increase and continuing business threats from
within the workplace, a reliable background checking system is
essential for checking all potential employees, not just at the point
of entry to an organisation, including the shortlisting stage, but
throughout the period of employment. The onus is now on recruitment
consultancies, who are typically not equipped to do background checks
themselves, to undertake effective background checking before placing
people in posts. BackgroundChecking.com offers a range of detailed
screening processes and will be providing Ardea with regular candidate
checking services.
