Current news on the security guard industry often reflects issues on inadequate training for security guards, improper use of force, security guard working conditions, unqualified security guards, unclear, weak, or poorly written policies issued by security guard companies.

Some security guards seem to be underpaid, lacking in benefits, and not provided with the supervision that allows companies to monitor, control, and reward their employees. Lack of fair compensation can be one factor contributing to the amount of crimes committed by security guards or security officers. Lack of good training and standards may also be an important factor as well as lack of pride in this important, but often under-appreciated profession.

It may take unionization and the passage of additional state and federal laws to enable true change to take place and for the title of "Security Guard" to instill the pride and respect that it should.
